3D animation has become one of the most sought-after skills in the entertainment industry.
From movies and television shows to video games and virtual reality, the demand for talented 3D animators is on the rise.
If you have a passion for art and technology and are interested in pursuing a career in 3D animation, this guide is for you.
So, first things first…
Understand the basics
Before diving into the world of 3D animation, it’s important to understand the basics.
3D animation involves the creation of three-dimensional objects and characters that are then animated and brought to life.
This process involves several stages, including modeling, texturing, rigging, and animation.
Modeling is the process of creating 3D objects or characters using specialized software.
Texturing involves adding colors, patterns, and details to these objects to make them appear more realistic.
Rigging involves adding a digital skeleton to these objects, which allows them to be moved and animated.
Finally, animation involves creating movement and bringing these objects to life.
To get started in 3D animation, you’ll need to familiarize yourself with the software used in the industry.
Some popular software options include Autodesk Maya, 3DS Max, and Cinema 4D. Blender is a great free open-source alternative. These programs offer a wide range of tools and features that allow you to create and animate 3D objects and characters.

Building your portfolio
Building a strong portfolio is one of the most important steps in becoming a 3D animator. Your portfolio should showcase your skills and potential as an animator.
You should include various projects demonstrating your ability to create 3D models, textures, and animations.
There are several ways to build your portfolio, including working on personal projects, collaborating with other animators, and participating in online communities.
You can also showcase your work on social media platforms like Behance, Instagram, and ArtStation.
These platforms allow you to connect with other animators and showcase your work to a wider audience.
The video below covers some tips on how to create a great 3D animation portfolio.
Finding a job
Once you have a strong portfolio, it’s time to start looking for a job in the industry.
There are several ways to find job opportunities, including networking with other animators, attending industry events, and researching companies that are hiring.
When applying for jobs, it’s important to showcase your portfolio and demonstrate your skills as an animator. You should also prepare for job interviews by researching the company and practicing your interview skills.
In addition to finding a job in the industry, freelancing is another option for 3D animators. Freelancing allows you to work on a variety of projects, set your own schedule, and choose the clients you work with.
To start freelancing as a 3D animator, you’ll need to build a strong portfolio and establish yourself as a reliable and skilled animator.
You can find freelance opportunities by networking with other animators, joining online freelance communities, and creating profiles on freelance platforms like Upwork, Freelancer, and Fiverr.
One of the benefits of freelancing is that you can work on projects from anywhere in the world, as long as you have a computer and an internet connection. This allows you to work with clients from different countries and cultures, and gain experience in a variety of industries.
If you’re interested in freelancing as a 3D animator, it’s important to do your research and prepare yourself for the challenges and opportunities that come with freelancing.
The field of 3D animation is constantly evolving, so it’s important to stay up-to-date on industry trends and advancements.
To stay up-to-date, you can attend industry events, read industry publications, join online forums, follow industry blogs, and participate in online communities.
You should also continue to work on personal projects and collaborate with other animators to improve your skills and challenge yourself.
Speaking of challenges, Ahmad Merheb, a senior 3D animator says, “Keeping up to date with the trends and the competition is the biggest challenge I have faced during my 14-year-long animation career.”
He continues, “The animation field is always changing with new tools and techniques, and scripts that make the process quicker and easier, sticking to your old tools will serve you for some time but, soon enough, you will find yourself outdated.”
In order to overcome this hurdle, Ahmad said he invested in himself:
“Whether it’s a training course, a new book, trying a new script, and so on, it’s the best kind of investing you could do because it has no losing margin. You always win if you invest in yourself.”
